This exquisite item features a delicately and beautifully painted depiction of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.
 

The artwork illustrates the seven sages who chose a reclusive life in the bamboo groves during the Jin Dynasty in China. These sages separated themselves from worldly matters, enjoying leisurely pursuits such as banquets, music, and philosophical discussions influenced by the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi.

In Japan, especially from the late Muromachi period onward, this theme also appeared in screen paintings that  conveyed moral or cautionary messages.
